Jury Accuses Teva Pharmaceuticals for its Role in in the Opioid Epidemic in New York City

The New York Jury has made Teva Pharmaceuticals responsible Opioid addiction in New York state ans accused that its affiliates helped fuel an Opioid epidemic in the state. According to the lawsuit filed in 2019, Teva Pharmaceuticals and other firms are accused of conducting aggressive marketing of the painkiller and causing death and destruction across the state.

The company will have to pay damages, said the state’s attorney general. Opposing the accusations, Teva Pharmaceuticals officials argued that it was not involved in deceptive marketing of the drug and stated that it compiled with the federal and state regulations.

The lawsuit targeted six drug-makers, Opioid distributors, and members of the Sackler family who founded Purdue Pharma. The damages that will be paid by the drug-maker might be used for treatment and support services for the patients addicted by. The investigators and authorities undergone in-depth study found that half a million people died in the US due to Opioid addiction and overdoses over 20 years period until 2019.

Statistics of CDC state that one lakh people died due to overdose of Opioid between April 2020 and April 2021. CDC stated that these figures are driven by increased consumption of fentanyl, a synthetic. TO date, over 3,300 lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers by the state authorities and different communities across the country accusing the pharmaceutical firms of the addiction pandemic and misleading people.
